King Cyrus of Persia was a tool. Not a very nice term to describe one of the great kings of the ancient world. In history, he is known as “the Great.” In Isaiah 45:1, he is referred to as the anointed or messiah. However, he was nothing but a tool and the rest of Isaiah 45 makes that very, very clear. Cyrus the King of Persia was nothing but a TOOL for the King and Creator of the Universe.
Cyrus even though he was a pagan King was anointed to be used FOR a purpose — to allow/enable the children of Israel to return back to the Holy Land after their 70 years of captivity was completed. He was a tool used for a purpose. He was an instrument. He was a nail and God is the Hammer in the equation.
Therefore, any attempts to minimize the importance and value of THE MESSIAH by using Cyrus as an example miss the point and miss the grammatical purpose of Cyrus completely.
Short post but important as we draw ever closer to Passover.
