One coming or two? Messiah Ben Joseph vs Messiah Ben David? In Fiddler on the Roof, Motol asking the rabbi, “Isn’t it time for the Messiah?” All of these thoughts came to mind during the few verses of today’s #QT – Jeremiah 23:1-8.
However, and ultimately, we are able to discover a secret. The secret of the ages actually. For in these verses, we discover the name of the Righteous Branch, the Messiah. Really? Yes, plain as day in verse 6 — In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this [is] his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (aka Jehovah Tzidkenu)
Whoa! Are you saying the name of the Messiah is also the holy name of God, the Tetragrammaton? Nope. God Himself said it!
So how could the Messiah also be God? How could a man be God himself? I am glad you asked!
Because, as we prepare for the beginning of Hanukkah on Sunday night, our thoughts should take us to John 10:22-31. Jesus walking in the Temple was asked whether or not He was the Messiah. His answer – “I and my Father are one.” I think Jesus just answered all our questions … Don’t you?
