May 14, 1948 … Fulfillment of Ezekiel 37

Sixty years ago the nation of Modern Israel was reborn in one day (Ezekiel 37 anyone?).  What a magnificient day for the world!  Especially in light of the horrors of the Holocaust revealed only three years earlier in 1945.

Incidentally the Southern Baptist president Harry S Truman was the first head of state to recognize Israel as a nation even as the countries of the Middle East were plotting the destruction of the state.  We must thank President Truman for this act of courage, this act of obedience, and this act of faith.

Sixty years later many countries of the Middle East are still plotting the destruction of Modern Israel, including the president of Iran who even yesterday promised that Israel was destined for a soon and sudden destruction.  As was the case in 1948, May 14, 2008 is a time to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6) as never before.

However, it is not enough to simply pray and support Israel.  We must be diligent, busy, dedicated and focused on the task of Jewish missions and evangelism.  Supporting the nation of Israel without being concerned with the eternal destiny of the people of the Promised Land is nothing more than being a loud gong or a clanging cymbal … evidence of the lack of true love.

So on this day of national celebration let us be prayerful about the spiritual and eternal needs of God’s Chosen Ones.  If we forget this truth than our support truly means nothing.
